In February Taylor confirmed that the re-recorded version of the album would contain six tracks – from the vault – that she wrote while filming Fearless but didn’t make it onto the record.
» I’ve decided that you should have the full story, « wrote Taylor in her announcement. “See the entire vivid picture and immerse yourself in the entire dreamscape that is my Fearless album.”
During an infamous appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on November 11, 2008, a then 18-year-old Taylor spoke about the recent demise of her relationship with Joe, claiming he was separated from her for 27 seconds during an ongoing phone conversation.
In the same interview, she revealed that he was about him in « Forever & Always, » which appeared on Fearless went.
This is all speculation, of course, and it could very well be that “Mr. Perfectly Fine “is not about Joe Jonas at all. We don’t know when exactly the song was written, but Taylor and Joe only dated three months before they split in October – less than a month before Fearless was released. According to a 2008 interview with the Los Angeles Times, « Forever & Always » was written so late in the album creation process that Taylor had to ask for it to be included on the record the day before it was finished.
Ultimately However, it doesn’t matter who the song is about. This Ellen interview came closest to confirming the inspiration for one of the songs on Fearless. As a result, Joe 13 years later is still connected to the music Taylor made when he was 18.
« Mister. Perfectly Fine » could be about Joe Jonas. It couldn’t. But what matters is that people believe for it to be so.
Whether it was just a result of maturity, their long-term relationship, or the whole world turning against them and their person, Taylor has renamed himself.
In many ways it was Considered the beginning of the complete upheaval in Taylor’s personality in 2017 and has only continued since then. Her 2020 albums Folklore and Evermore were her least autobiographical, and Taylor chose to draw from the experiences of fictional characters and invent new ones in their songwriting instead of putting their most personal moments on a record for public consumption.
« There was a point where, as a writer who only wrote very diaristic songs, I felt that this was for my future future ft is not sustainable, « she told Zane Lowe in an Apple Music interview about the Evermore release. “It felt like a microscope that was too hot. On my bad days, I felt like I was loading a clickbait cannon when I don’t want that for my life. «
We all know by now that Taylor’s argument with Big Machine Records over her master recordings is why she goes through this re-recording process. From the beginning, she made it clear that owning her work takes precedence over leaving her Music and related drama in the past.
The very personal nature of her music was something that Taylor made explicit reference to in her Tumblr post after Big Machine sold her masters to Scooter Braun and wrote, “Me Had to make the agonizing decision to put my past behind me, music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I made up and paid for with the money I made in bars, clubs, arenas and stadiums «
To get back her life’s work, Taylor is re-recording and re-releasing all of this very personal music. To make things for fans who’ve been more than Fearless since 2008 Trusting to keep it fresh and exciting, it contains songs she’s never released before.
In doing so, however, she runs the risk of re-centering all of the personal drama and inviting her critics to share her oldest, most unoriginal complaints about hers Reheat music: she only writes songs about breakups. She’s dating too many men. It’s all about the drama.
Those complaints may be out of date, but Taylor will still face them in 2021: Just last month she publicly condemned the Netflix show Ginny & Georgia for making a “lazy and deeply sexist joke “About her dating life.
Me in 2020: Life is cold, I write songs based on fiction to avoid drama, and feel pretty grown up
My 2008 music from the vault with a goblin voice: « REELEEEEEEASE MR PERFECTLY FIIIIIIINE »
« Life is cold, you write songs based on fiction to avoid drama and you feel pretty grown up, » wrote Taylor in her tweet about herself in the year 2020 and announced the release of the track.
And then she admitted « with a goblin voice » that her music from 2008 completely contradicted this new, cool attitude.
When Sophie posted a link a few hours after its release about the song posted on her Instagram story, she made sure to tag Taylor right away, and wrote, « It’s not a bop. »
(Joe was silent on the matter, but his blessings are less important. When The driver’s license debacle taught us something, should it be that people find a way to transform it, even if a girl writes a song about a boy feuding with another girl.)
And so were Great tweets posted, beef was pre-emptively zerq Uetscht and lessons were given: There doesn’t always have to be drama. There can only be bops.
By releasing “Mr. Perfectly Okay, ”just a few days before Fearless (Taylor’s version), Taylor anticipated and closed any overused and outdated review that might arise from repeating her past.
She tells the world that she is aware of and laughs at the possibility of tabloids trying to fuel a decades-old drama. Not only does she own her music, but she’s also making one of the derogatory jokes you might want to make about it. And do you know what that is? Growth.
