Texas governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that he was ending the statewide mask mandate despite warnings from federal health officials that the lifting of coronavirus security measures could now lead to a renewed spike in cases and deaths / p> « Now is the time to open 100% Texas, » Abbott said to cheers and applause at a Lubbock restaurant. « Everyone who wants to work should have this opportunity. » Any business that wants to be open should be open. «

A new executive order, which the governor described as » repealing « most of the orders issued during the pandemic, allows all businesses to open at full capacity from March 10. Abbott said Texas had gotten to that point , which no longer needs statewide mandates to fight COVID-19.

« To be clear, COVID didn’t suddenly go away, » Abbott said, arguing that individuals still have a responsibility to follow health protocols . « Personal vigilance to meet safety standards is still required to contain COVID. It’s just that government mandates are no longer required. «

The announcement was quickly criticized by Democrats in Texas and elsewhere as a » dangerous « and » reckless « decision that will endanger lives.

» What Abbott is doing is extraordinarily dangerous, « Texas Democratic Party leader Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement. Infectious disease specialists in our country have warned that we should not lose our vigilance even as we progress towards vaccination «

Just last week, the US passed the unimaginable milestone of half a million people who have died of COVID-19. The decline in cases now appears to be reaching a plateau.

In the past few days, senior health officials have warned against abandoning measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus, even if the introduction of the vaccine in the US accelerates « With these statistics, I’m really concerned that more states are backing down the exact public health measures we have recommended to protect people from COVID-19, » said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, during a briefing at the White House on Monday. « At this level of cases with spreading variant, we will completely lose the hard-earned ground we gained. »

Last month, the CDC officially approved dual masking to improve the fit of face coverings since more infectious COVID-19 variants are spreading across the country. Federal health officials have emphasized the importance of continuing to wear masks until the majority of the population is vaccinated. Masks are currently mandatory on airplanes, buses, trains and other public transport, as well as at airports and train stations.

Despite the changes in statewide mandates, Abbott says companies can take their own security measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus. However, district judges are not allowed to impose penalties on anyone who does not wear a mask. Texas counties can also impose their own restrictions, he said, but all businesses must be allowed to operate at at least 50% capacity.

Texas joins a handful of states that have reversed their mask mandates. Several states have not implemented a mandate at all.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves also lifted his state’s mask mandate on Tuesday, saying the number of cases has « fallen so far that no county meets the original criteria for a mask mandate » .

« I’m replacing our current orders with referrals, » Reeves said in a statement. « Everyone should continue to listen to [State Health Officer Thomas] Dobbs and other health professionals for the best possible wisdom on how to personally contain the risk of developing COVID. »

Must be under the Regulations signed by Reeves only indoor spaces limit capacity to 50%, and schools still require face coverings.
