Some people start the game far behind and that doesn’t change the way they work. So let’s be frank when we finally see California’s reparations proposals.

The San Diego International Jewish Film Festival, going virtual for the first time, is not missing out on showcasing compelling dramas, suspenseful thrillers and thought-provoking documentaries . Now in its 31st year, the festival will bring in some award winners and a bit of star power.

The documentary « Common Legacies: The African American Alliance of Jewish Civil Rights » opens the festival, which starts on February 11th. The film examines these shared legacies through the lens of friendship between Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Heschel in the mid-1960s.

« Shared Legacies » is about the common bonds between black and Jewish communities  » said Chris Fink, chairman of the festival, a program of the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. “We’re opening it because the film addresses contemporary issues. This is especially important now as interest in Black Lives Matter has grown. «

Some festival selections are only available for a few days, while others can be viewed anytime during the festival.

» The big advantage of a virtual festival is that you can watch a film in your home, « said Fink . « They control the schedule. »

The festival’s closing film is « Here We Are, » which won four 2020 Ophir Awards, Israel’s Oscars equivalent. In addition to Nir Bergman’s win for Best Director, he won Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Supporting Actor. The touching drama follows a single father and autistic son as they steer the son’s imminent transition to a specialized home and a more independent life.

The festival also features the Ophir’s Best Film Winner Awards 2020, « Asia, » which is Israel’s submission to this year’s Academy Awards. The moving mother-daughter story also won the Ophir Awards for best actress and best supporting actress for Alena Yiv and Shira Haas. Many Americans know Haas for her leading role in the popular TV miniseries « Unorthodox ».

Another well-known actor at the festival is the Dane Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from the hit series « Game of Thrones ». He stars in « The Day We Died », a Danish production that follows four men during two days of terrorist attacks in Copenhagen in 2015. Fink calls it « an exciting crime thriller ».

When it comes to documentaries, the festival’s selection committee prefers films that reveal new information.

« We saw » Ma’aborat « which was about transit camps that were built after World War II when Jews came to Israel, « she recalled. « They are the forerunners of the kibbutz. We immediately said, » Oh my God! We never knew about that. « Bingo! This is the kind of documentary we’re looking for. »

The festival does away with packages and passes this year and only sells single tickets. More than 15 of the 35+ films will feature video introductions by the filmmakers and five post-screening panels with cast or crew members.

« We didn’t want to miss the dynamic that creates community interaction, which is a hallmark of the festival « said Ryan Isaac, director of cultural arts at the Center for Jewish Culture. « So we have occasional Zoom meetings, similar to virtual book clubs. Some conversations are tied to specific films, others give people the opportunity to see each other and speak when they want.

» I’m happy to have that we can continue the tradition of the festival even through the pandemic. We have found a way for our long-time customers and new supporters to enjoy movies remotely.

« Glad we are maintaining what we have been for 30 years as we enter our 31st year . «
