World news – The Somali policeman stops parliament and is dismissed

Saadaq Omar Hassan, who was in charge of police operations in Somalia’s capital, said he was acting unilaterally to prevent MPs from extending President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s term.

« We stopped the parliamentary session today. We have a greater responsibility than a personal one, « said Hassan in a live speech to local television broadcaster Universal.

Moments later, Somalia’s Police Commissioner Hassan Mohamed Hijar announced on Facebook that Hassan had been fired and replaced.

The chaos underscores the expansion of divisions within the security services in the Horn of Africa over the extension of the four-year term of President Mohamed, who is under increasing pressure to resign after the end of his term as head of state in February.
