World news – The wiggles covered Tame Impala for like a version and it was hot (potato)

It turns out The Wiggles can really rip apart a keytar solo.

After a week of feverish speculation about which song they are tackling for the debut of Like A Version the misery is over now. This morning, fruit salad lovers recorded The Wiggles Tame Impala’s 2012 track « Elephant » – and it was very, very good.

Of course the Wiggles have chops – Murray Cook is a legitimate rock god himself, and the other Wiggles are just as knowledgeable – so there was no doubt that they could actually pull off such a cover. But when I heard The Wiggles, OGs Jeff and Murray join the current crew on the occasion, Kevin Parker’s psych-rock mayhem was a little mind boggling. They also threw a bit of ‘fruit salad’ into the mix which was a treat.

« We wanted to go for something Australian, » revealed Emma Watkins, the yellow wiggle. « Most of the time we’ve had the privilege of going to the ARIAs, we see Tame Impala on stage a lot. We never really met them, but we thought we’d like to pay tribute to this amazing Australian band. » « We know people take [Like A Version] very seriously, » said Anthony Field. « So we didn’t mean to cram it. Besides, it’s an amazing song and it’s deceptively difficult. I thought it was going to be like [Norman Greenbaum’s] » Spirit In The Sky, « but you join in and … the guy’s a Genius! «

Check out the cover below – and watch the original » We are All Fruit Salad « while you’re at it.
