A gallop visit in the valley on Monday forced the Sirius suspect, trained by Saab Hasan, to change his mind and direction.
Hasan originally intended to start the sprinter in the William Reid Stakes in Group 1 (1200 m) on Friday evening. Instead he opted for the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200 m) in Mornington on Friday.
After working at The Valley on Monday, Hasan was concerned about the condition of the track after the heavy rain that fell last Saturday.
While the track has recovered and Hasan praised the track staff for the work, he felt that the surface of Mornington would better suit his accusation.
« You haven’t raced Mornington in two months and I just had a feeling it would be a better surface as he had a few minor issues with the past, » said Hasan.
« The track (in The Valley) was just a little worn from last Saturday’s race and we didn’t want to risk it on a blotchy surface.
» He’s a pretty fast horse. There will be a lot of speed and I don’t know if we can get the best part of the track to win the race.
« I’m gaining weight, but I’m going to class so it looks better. »
Sirius Suspect will take on Ancestry, a scratch from William Reid, though Hasan was happy to hear that Brooklyn Hustle is going to The Valley rather than the Mornington Contest.
He said barrier six in Saturday’s competition is ideal as new jockey Patrick Moloney can settle wherever he wants during the run.
« I don’t think you can run Ancestry, but he can sit down and then go upstairs and test it at the right time. »
