Many of us remember where we were on January 22, 2008 when the news came, that the esteemed Australian actor, father and friend Heath Ledger has passed away.

Today Ledger would have been 42 years old and people are going to Twitter to celebrate their favorite appearances and public moments. Here are some of the highlights.

I remember the Heidebuch as the father of Matilda, as he would like it to be. ha #happybirthdayheathledger pic.twitter.com/KRPgyGaIPt

No homage to Heath Ledger is complete without mentioning his last completed role and arguably his most iconic, the Joker. Ledger reintroduced an entire generation of the character in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight in 2008.

The role of him as Best Supporting Actor Oscar. To this day, he is one of the few actors to have been nominated and win posthumously. I think Ledger’s Joker appearance is one of the main reasons The Dark Knight is widely considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time.

Twitter is now full of people posting their favorite Heath clips and moments from The Dark Knight . I won’t speak for anyone but myself, but my personal favorite is the monologue Ledger gives as the Joker while hanging gleefully upside down during his final scene in the film. The line, « I think you and I are destined to … forever » keep me shivering.

Heath Ledger’s range as an actor was unprecedented and evident, even in the finite time we have been blessed with his work . In just over a decade, Ledger has put his talents on an incredible variety of appearances, from Patrick Verona in 10 Things I Hate About You, to the downtrodden gay shepherd Ennis in Brokeback Mountain, to the villain in The The Joker plays, rich The Dark Knight.

It is a filmography whose breadth rivals actors who have been acting for decades. Having such a wide variety of accomplished and beloved appearances after just a decade of filmmaking is nothing short of raw talent. As tragic as it is to imagine what Ledger has continued to achieve in his craft, we are also so lucky that he leaves such a variety of great performances to remember.

I know that just me few people will have who disagree with me when I say Heath Ledger had a magical smile. Many actors have their thing, the tick they have to adapt to any performance. Some actors can say anything with their hands or maybe a certain word or voice, but Heath Ledger had a smile for every role and everyone was lovely.

Congratulations to one of the greatest actors who ever lost. Ledger is missing and survived by movie buffs, fans, friends, family, his daughter Matilda Ledger and partner Michelle Williams. He was taken far too early at 27, but we are overjoyed that his incredible work will keep him in mind on his 42nd birthday.
