World News – UA – Greens emerge as a new force

The Greens have taken the biggest scalp in Queensland's election, but the party is also on track to quadruple its seat count

Greens could quadruple the number of seats they hold in Queensland parliament after a strong performance in Saturday’s state election

In arguably the campaign’s biggest scalp, Amy MacMahon declared victory in the siege of downtown South Brisbane, toppling former Labor heavyweight Jackie Trad

“This is the culmination of many years of hard work and very strong candidates,” she told NCA NewsWire

Greens strategist Max Chandler-Mather says the party is on track to register more than 40% of primary votes in South Brisbane and Maiwar

The party’s highest state-level primary vote on record came in 2019 when Jenny Leong won 46% in Newtown, Sydney city center, in the New South Wales election

Outgoing Greens chairman Michael Berkman was reinstated as Maiwar MP, while Ms Waters said she hoped Katinka Winston-Allom would win Cooper’s seat, after Labor Minister Kate Jones decided to put end of his political career

“I knew we would do well at Cooper but she just pulled him off the charts,” she said.

Green candidate Kirsten Lovejoy is third in the ballot, but Ms Waters said she had not given up hope

« Looks like we have at least doubled, even tripled or quadrupled our seats in parliament, » she said, adding that the party was voting well in Greenslopes and Miller

There was also a switch to the Greens in the Moggill headquarters, west of Brisbane
