Emergency teams are at the scene of a large private dam in Torquay on the Surf Coast, with its leaking wall
SES says dam near Horseshoe Bend Road and Pintail Drive contains 180 megalitres of water and could collapse and cause localized flooding
The CFAs are also there, with their volunteers using large pumps for several hours to help reduce the water level in the dam
Police knocked on the doors of affected residents to provide information on the situation, including the evacuation of a number of properties south of Pintail Drive, but it is understood that some have refused to leave their home
The 109 residents of 41 houses who were evacuated have been asked to stay with family or friends, or they have been placed in other accommodation
Engineers continue to assess the dam on Saturday morning, but SES says there was no « catastrophic failure »
SES urges surrounding residents to remain vigilant and, in the event of a flood, to safely move away from the area, allowing for traffic detours
A community meeting is expected to take place this afternoon, details are still being finalized
