Channel Nine star Sylvia Jeffreys first revealed on Wednesday that she had undergone IVF to have her son, Oscar

The 34-year-old, who welcomed her first child with husband Peter Stefanovic, 38, in February, broke down in tears as she discussed her own infertility issues on Today Extra

Sylvia was talking to her mother Brooke Campbell about IVF treatment and the ‘overwhelming and overwhelming’ decision of what to do with frozen embryo leftovers once a family no longer wants to use them

As Brooke discussed the options available, a clearly moved Sylvia said: ‘Brooke, I know from my personal experience with IVF that the success of an embryo is so important’

As she fought back tears she continued, ‘and having something sitting there that gives you the opportunity to make life for your family. How are you and your husband doing? « 

Along with Brooke, IVF specialist Dr Ric Gordon discussed the four options available for unwanted frozen embryos; storage, donation to science, donation to a couple and disposal

According to IVF Australia, IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a procedure whereby an egg and a sperm are brought together in a specialized laboratory

The fertilized egg grows in a protected environment for a few days, before being transferred to the woman’s uterus, thus increasing the chances of pregnancy

According to the website, success rates vary from 349% per embryo transfer leading to a live birth for patients under 30, to 87% for patients over 40

Health insurer Bupa says typical cost of an IVF cycle is $ 8,000-10,000, with Medicare covering around 48%

Clearly still emotional, Sylvia continued, ‘This is such a fascinating subject, and Brooke obviously something so raw for you right now, so thank you very much for sharing’

‘The silver lining in having unused embryos is that you had your miracles You had your babies So that’s the most beautiful,’ ‘she added

At the end of the segment, Sylvia’s co-host David Campbell asked if she was okay, before giving her a supportive touch on the hand.

They announced their pregnancy in August 2019 – two years after their marriage – writing on Instagram: « We’re having a baby boy and we’re totally over the moon !! »

‘But above all just joy and wonder, and in awe of this beautiful little boy,’ she added

«  I think it was pretty obvious it was definitely for everyone around me – my mom and sister in particular knew there was something there,  » said Sylvia told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2016, when asked if it was love at first sight

‘It was the first time we had met face to face and it was shortly after that we started courting’

Sylvia replaced Today host Georgie Gardner in June 2014, confirming her relationship with Peter around the same time
