A teenager is in hospital after being bitten by a shark while surfing at Town Beach in Port Macquarie on Monday morning

The 13-year-old was surfing just off Town Beach’s reef around 6 a.m. when the incident happened

The shark’s species has not yet been confirmed, but lifeguard James Turnham, who was on the beach when NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the teenager, said he could be it a small reef shark or a bull shark

« It was not that far The waves only break 30 to 40 meters this morning, » said M Turnham

« He was in the center of the beach near the rocks where there is a little reef

« He made a mess in his ankle and there was a small bite on his finger It was not life threatening

There were surfers along the beach to the breakwater this morning It is believed the boy’s mother called for help from other surfers when she realized what had happened

NSW paramedics were called and treated the teenager on the beach before transporting him to the Port Macquarie base hospital, an ambulance spokesperson said

M Turnham said the beach would likely be closed for the rest of the day

A small, clean swell is looming over Town Beach, but a larger swell is expected to hit the southern beaches of the region today
