UC Santa Barbara (12-3, 6-2 Big West) hasn’t lost in the New Year – the gauchos won all eight games in January – and it’s going to be a winning streak of eight games in the first game of a two-game Big West weekend series against hosts Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (7-5, 5-5).
Only Gonzaga (19 games), Baylor (17), Belmont (17) , Morehead State (11) and Loyola Chicago (10) had longer winning streaks than UC Santa Barbara in NCAA Division 1.
UC Santa Barbara is 51st in the NCAA net rankings, ahead of Minnesota and North Carolina, among others . Only one other Big West team is in the top 100.
Trainer Joe Pasternak’s gauchos are in the top 12 of the NCAA Division I in four offensive categories – ninth in goal percentage (plus 17.2), twelfth in Field goal percentage (50.3%), ninth in assists (18.0 per game) and fourth in assist / turnover ratio (1.7: 1).
The numbers are achieved by a 71-point win in the preseason against Bethesda University, a member of the Pacific Christian Athletic Association, somewhat skewed. At the same time, the Gauchos have outperformed their opponents in their current winning streak by an average of 19.4 points in eight games.
Santa Barbara plays slowly but efficiently. According to KenPom, the gauchos rank 299th at the adjusted pace, but rank 78th in offensive efficiency, by far the best in the Great West.

The consistent game of Senior Guards JaQuori McLaughlin and Devearl Ramsey has a lot to do with it. McLaughlin leads the gauchos in the standings (16.9 points per game) and has 64 assists against 17 sales. Ramsey (7.2 points) has 50 assists and 10 turnovers.
The second security guard Ajare Sanni is on average 12.9 points away from the bench, has scored 25 3-point points at team level and 32 assists against 16 turnovers . Six-foot-9 junior Amadou Sow averages 11.4 points and leads the Big West with 8.6 rebounds per game.
UC Santa Barbara s will be playing its first game in 13 days, in one 89-86 extra time win at UC Davis on January 30th. The gauchos haven’t lost since December 28th when they fell to UC Irvine.
Hawaii, which only started its season on December 11th, has postponed two Big West games.

The Rainbow Warriors scored 165 points and shot in their two wins over Cal Poly (1 -9, 3-13) 58% and 55% of the field. Graduate transfer Casdon Jardine has scored 20 3-point points and leads the Big West in three-point field scoring with 55.6%
UC Santa Barbara has been a good choice this season, especially during the current winning streak. The gauchos have 8-5 ATS total and were 6-1 ATS in the first seven games of their winning streak until they weren’t considered a nine-point favorite in the 89-86 win at UC Davis. They were favored by at least nine points in each of their last eight points.
UC Santa Barbara has won four of the last five games in the series, but Hawaii has won four of the last five at home. The gauchos are 4-4 ATS as the street favorite in the league this season. The Rainbow Warriors are 6-3 ATS (two games were off the board), 3-2 ATS at home, and cover the last three.
