The SUPER League top performers, not just in 2020 but throughout their careers, were honored at today’s Steve Prescott Man of Steel Awards.

From the unparalleled top scorer and top tackler to the servants of the game who have become household names in the toughest of circumstances, the unprecedented 2020 season draws to a close in traditional style – with today’s season end ceremony through to Friday’s Grand Final.

Castleford Tigers’ hooker Paul McShane is the 2020 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel.

He defeated competitors Aidan Sezer (Huddersfield Giants), Liam Farrell and Bevan French (both Wigan Warriors) and Saints’ Lachlan Coote with the highest individual award in the game.

Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel Chairman Ellery Hanley MBE said, “The award rightly goes to Paul McShane because he appears in every game he plays.

“This is a man who wears his badge of honor in every action he takes on the rugby league field.

“You only have to be in his company for three minutes to find out what a gentleman and first-class person he is.

Given the disruption to the 2020 campaign caused by Covid-19, some changes had to be made to the Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel evaluation process during the season.

The selection of the winner had advantages and disadvantages, either based on the points accumulated or on the average of the points per game introduced in October.

The total points accumulated clearly benefited those whose team had played more games over the course of 2020, while an average format with points per game could benefit those whose team had played fewer games.

In addition, without the full 22 rounds of the regular season, there were further disagreements regarding the opposition.

For example, if a player has played twice against teams in the bottom half of the table, but only once against teams in the top four tables, an advantage is perceived.

For these reasons, the Man of Steel competitors, who were the same five players on the leaderboard in both scenarios (total points and points per game), went for a final review by Man of Steel panel chairman Ellery Hanley MBE.

The top five candidates were: Aidan Sezer, Paul McShane, Liam Farrell, Lachlan Coote and Bevan French.

In order for the chairman to make a fair and informed decision on who will become the 2020 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel winner, individual player stats have been included in the report to Ellery Hanley throughout the season.
