Kilmarnock midfielder ALAN Power has denied claims that Scott Brown, the Celtic captain, is no longer the force he once was and has predicted that he will be as formidable an opponent as he is when he is today plays at Parkhead.

Brown, who turned 35 in the summer, was regularly replaced by Neil Lennon in the 2020/21 season and completely left out by his manager in the Europa League game against Lille on Thursday evening.

Some fans of the Glasgow club feel that their skipper was partly responsible for the disappointing results – they had only won two of their last 12 games before the game in Lille in the last few weeks – and want either Ismaila Soro or David Turnbull be given a longer run.

However, Power, the Irish ball winner who has been involved in many wild duels with the Scotsman in his three and a half years in this country, suspects that if his old rival is picked again this afternoon he will be there in a difficult 90 minutes.

« I think Scott is the same player, » he said. “He controls the games well and manages on the pitch. He takes care of himself, he’s a good professional. I still think he’s someone Celtic looks to, especially during this time. It’s a great honor for him. He’s obviously getting on with his business.

« There can be ups and downs in football. He won’t play well in every game, but then you need other people to improve. That is what makes a good team. For us there are no outstanding people. But if we all make a shift we can be a good team.

« I don’t think about the fighting with Scott Brown. I treat him just like everyone else. I won’t be afraid to attack anyone.

« I don’t think anyone on our team would do that, whether it’s Scott Brown or any other Celtic player. I know a lot is made of it when two midfielders meet, but I get a lot of stick no matter who I attack?  »

Power added: « The Celtic midfield may have been more troubled than usual but they have had injuries and the Covid cases. It was the same for all of us, and you have to hack and change.

“But Celtic has the roster to deal with it. You go through a little phase and that’s it. It happens to all teams, from Kilmarnock to Celtic. We’re all going through a sticky spot – and hopefully Celtic will still be around this weekend!

« They made changes and I think their manager is trying to find a way to make them click together. It was the same with us. When things don’t work out, hack and change. This is how football works and maybe it can give a missile to other players. ”

The new Kilmarnock signing Nicke Kabamba gave the Celtic defense, which had conceded 30 goals in the last 13 games, a hot afternoon at rugby park in August and helped the Ayrshire club in the 1-1 draw.

Power hopes the 6ft 3in English striker, who has scored five goals in his last eleven games, can cause the same problems for his hosts today at Parkhead and help the visitors score another result.

« I don’t think a lot of people knew about Nicke and what he was capable of at the time, » he said. “He came from the National League. I think he was probably unknown and put on a performance like he did that day. Hopefully he scared him.

“He can do that against any middle half. We just want him to do this for us week after week. He can also change his game. He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve. He’s not just a ball that wins in the air as a striker. He is good with his feet. He’s getting a few more goals now. We’ll see where it takes us. ”
