As World Boxing News predicted, Canelo Alvarez, who was in the promoters market last September, would have some interest in joining the old enemy Floyd Mayweather.
Canelo fought in court against Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya and the streaming service DAZN in the fall. The Mexican referred to the loss of earnings for 2020.
The relationship was irreparable for the reasons stated above. The 30-year-old pound for pound king broke up and rumors swirled that he needed a new home.
The two know each other well because of their businesses and respect each other massively as business people.
When Canelo fought Mayweather as a teenager in 2013, it was well documented that he wanted to learn everything from the former ruler to take his place.
Canelo lost the competition to a (controversial) split decision (which Floyd should have made unanimously). But the common realization was that Canelo proved at a tender age that he had what it takes to be Floyd’s successor.
Joining DAZN again to take on Callum Smith next week still seems like a temporary measure. Canelo needs to advertise on Pay Per View and he knows it.
Therefore, Canelo can probably cancel what is perceived as a single fight with DAZN at any time – if he so wishes.
If the dust settled on his next fight, would that mean Mayweather and Canelo are working well together? – In my opinion, yes, it would. It’s a perfect partnership.
The mutual admiration for being at the top of the pay-per-view game is immediately noticeable at the beginning.
Mayweather could get Canelo back on the paid platform at Showtime as well, potentially earning hundreds of millions of dollars per fight instead of over a streak of ten like DAZN.
As the American has pointed out, Mayweather Canelo’s entire deal against Manny Pacquiao was signed in one night. Against Conor McGregor.
This PPV game has levels and Canelo needs the paid platform to be able to break these kind of records.
Leaving the PPV scene has hurt Canelo since he left. In addition, under Golden Boy he never really settled at DAZN.
Mayweather would be wise to bid in 2021 and do whatever it takes to get Canelo in the books.
