Coca Cola, Pepsico and Nestle are named the World’s Most Pollutant Companies for the third year in a row. In fact, the amount of plastic waste produced by Coca Cola was 13. 834 pieces in 51 countries, larger than the amount collected by Pepsico and Nestle combined. This data was published by Break Free From Plastic in its Dec.. December published third annual report “BRANDED Vol III: Demanding Corporate Responsibility for Plastic Pollution” reported. The annual survey was conducted from 15. 000 volunteers in 55 countries where they carried out 346. Collected 494 pieces of plastic from their surroundings.

Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) is a global movement that was launched in 2016 and has been publishing reports since 2018 naming the world’s most polluting organizations. They work with thousands of volunteers and non-governmental organizations on a global scale to count and document the brands of plastic waste in countries.

Break Free From Plastic says these multinationals are pumping out so much single-use plastic that plastic production could double by 2030 and triple by 2050.

“It is not surprising that for three years in a row the same big brands are on the podium as the world’s leading plastic polluters. These companies claim to be tackling the plastics crisis but continue to invest in wrong solutions as they partner with oil companies to produce even more plastic, « Abigail Aguilar, regional coordinator of the plastics campaign at Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said in a statement.

« To stop this chaos and fight climate change, multinational companies like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestlé need to end their reliance on single-use plastic packaging and move away from fossil fuels, » she added.

Another report from the Changing Markets Foundation was released in September, entitled « Talking Trash: The Corporate Playbook of False Solutions, » which named Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle as the world’s biggest plastic polluters. The report looked at the voluntary commitments and group initiatives of the top ten plastic polluters and found that they “serve to distract consumers and governments and allow polluters to continue doing business as usual. The report also says they are working behind the scenes « to delay and derail legislation and ensure they can continue to flood the world with cheap, single-use plastic packaging.

Seven of the Top Ten Polluters – The Coca-Cola Company; PepsiCo; Nestling; Unilever; Mondelez International; Mars, Inc. . ;; and Colgate-Palmolive – signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in October 2018, according to which they must « get rid of all unnecessary plastics » while reusing or recycling plastic items in a circular system and creating more sustainable substitutes.

However, the foundation reported that its signatories only reduced virgin plastic use by 0. 1 percent from 2018 to 2019. In the meantime, Coca-Cola has increased the amount of plastic it uses.

In India they collected 12. 927 plastic waste, which is a huge jump from last year when they only got 1. 811 collected plastic objects. The top three plastic polluters in India this year, according to data from 2018 to 2020, are Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Cooperative Ltd, Unilever and Britannia. Britannia was also on the list in 2019.

Coca-Cola told The Guardian that it is working to clean up packaging waste. A spokesman said: « Globally, we are committed to getting every bottle back by 2030 so none of it ends up as waste or in the oceans and the plastic can be recycled into new bottles. Bottles made with 100 percent recycled plastic are now available in 18 markets around the world and are growing steadily. ”

A Nestlé spokesman told Fast Company: « We know we have an important role to play in designing sustainable solutions to tackle the plastic waste problem. We are stepping up our measures to make 100% of our packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce the use of new plastics by a third in the same period. So far, 87 percent of our total packaging and 66 percent of our plastic packaging are recyclable or reusable. While we are making significant strides in sustainable packaging, we know that more needs to be done. Our goal is to create a circular economy in which we eliminate waste and reuse the resources we already have. « 

A PepsiCo spokesperson told Newsround that protecting the environment is very important to them. « We continue to work hard to reduce the plastic we use and include more recycled plastic in our packaging. It’s great to see so many people getting involved in projects we support like the Great British Spring Clean and our Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme as we work together to change the way we use and recycle plastic packaging. «
