World News – UK – Derbyshire confirms McDermott for 2021

Derbyshire has confirmed the signing of Australian T20 international wicketkeeper batsman Ben McDermott for all one-day cricket matches next summer.

The 25-year-old son of former great bowling star Craig McDermott of Australia Test is set to arrive in 2020.

Along with the signing of Paceman Sean Abbott, this was postponed in April after the coronavirus pandemic.

Derbyshire cricket boss Dave Houghton said: « Ben has the quality to be a real asset in the white ball formats, not just with the bat but with the gloves too.

« He is a player with international experience. His form in Big Bash over the years has shown what an important player he can be. « 

Queensland born McDermott has 1. Scored 258 T20 runs with a hit rate of 128, an average of 29. 95, including four half centuries and a century – a career best 114 for Hobart Hurricanes against former club Melbourne Renegades with just 52 balls, including nine sixes and eight fours.

He scored three centuries and an average of 49. 26 on list A cricket he played for his native Queensland and Tasmania.

McDermott’s father, Craig, now 55, ranks seventh on Australia’s all-time test wicket list after completing 291 in 71 tests between December 1984 and January 1996.
