From Scott Gilfoid: Hughe Fury weighed a career high of 247 1/4 pounds on Friday for his planned 10-round round bout against veteran Mariusz Wach on Saturday night at the SSE Arena in London, UK.
Hughie had a visible stomach and resembled a non-athlete in appearance, like someone who trained on donuts, cakes, and candy bars.
To show you how out of shape Fury is, he only weighed 224 pounds last year for his bout against Alexander Povetkin, whom Hughie lost by a fairly broad, 12-round unanimous decision, but he did a lot better than his Compatriot Dillian Whyte against the Russian fighter.
Hughie, 26, (24-3, 14 KOs) could ask for trouble getting this tough for this important fight, but at least he now has an excuse if he loses. If Hughie is struck awake by the towering 6’7 ″, he can always blame his weight.
The 40-year-old Wach (36-6, 19 KOs) looked in far better shape at 274 1/4 pounds. This is the same weight he received for his impressive 10-round unanimous win over Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson on Dec.. June.
« Awake is a tough opponent. Hopefully we can get a few laps out of him, ”said Hughie Fury. “There were other opponents [considered before Wach was selected], but I didn’t pay any attention to any of them. « Get me out, » I said.
« It’s good to be outside. If this hasn’t happened, it becomes more difficult and you just keep exercising. It’s nice to have this release.
« The main thing is to get past Wach and then have some good fights, » said Hughie Fury when asked what his plans for 2021 are.
“Whatever brings me back to the top. I did the experienced fights when I was younger so I’m ready for these [bigger fights] as I believe I belong on a world level. You’ll see, come on Saturday night, ”said Hughie, seemingly unaware that his career has imploded from too many defeats.
Anger that constantly roars about how it belongs on « the world level » is slowly becoming lean because it failed repeatedly in being brought into the position in which it had to prove worthy to be at the top stand.
I mean, the last name Fury can only get you this far if you can’t win against opponents on a world level.
Hughie’s midsection revealed that he either ate too much or didn’t get the workout he needed.
In Hughie’s previous fight that March, he weighed 238 pounds and looked fit for his low-level match against Pavel Sour in Manchester.
All four sanction agencies removed Hughie from their top 15 following his loss to Povetkin in 2019. Gilfoid isn’t sure if Wach is a good opponent for Hughie to get back into the top 15 if he wins on Saturday night.
The great Polish fighter isn’t in the top 15 either, so it doesn’t make sense for Hughie to get a top ranking after beating him. .
Of course, Hughie hasn’t helped himself by fighting only once since his loss to Povetkin and choosing Pavel Sour as his opponent rather than a competitor. But as bad as Hughie looked, you can understand why Sour was chosen for him.
What is interesting is how similar 40-year-old Wach and 26-year-old Hughie look in terms of their ages.
I mean, Wach is 14 years older than Hughie, and yet both boys look about the same physically. What this shows is chronological age for a person means nothing.
Hughie is living proof of that. Either Wach is aging backwards like Benjamin Button, or Hughie has accelerated neglect. At this point, Hughie doesn’t have too much time for him to get back into the top 15 as he’s aging quickly.
I select Awake to beat Hughie by a unilateral unanimous decision over 10 rounds on Saturday night. Hughie’s wide midsection will make wax work a lot easier, but that’s not why he’s going to win.
Wach is just an all round better fighter than Hughie, with far superior offensive skills and a toughness he could only dream of.
Hughie is too much of a runner and clincher to wake up, and that can’t be changed no matter who trains him.
A loss to Hughie on Wach is a clear sign that he does not belong on the world level and should no longer strive to return there.
Heck, Hughie never deserved to be in the top 15 at all for beating someone good enough to get high on the IBF and WBO.
I would say that if Hughie is beaten awake, I would say he should retire, but his name, Fury, can still make a good living fighting second grade boys.
There is talk of Hughie going on to fight former cruiserweight champion Marco Huck next when he wins against Wach.
Although 36-year-old Huck is completely shot and not a heavyweight at this point in his career, he still has more talent than Hughie. If Hughie has this fight against Huck, he’ll likely lose.
« I think it’s going to be a good fight, » said Hughie of Anthony vs. Joshua. . Kubrat Pulev Match in the Main Event on Saturday. « With Pulev, you can’t underestimate him.
He’s got a good push and I think he’ll cause Joshua problems early on, especially if he takes his push. But of course age catches up with you. When he [Pulev] was fighting me, I got injured in the third round, but I felt like he was getting tired against the eighth.
« I wiggled it on the seventh or eighth lap. I think this is where Joshua will do the most damage. But like I said, you can’t underestimate Pulev, it’s going to be a good fight.
« 100%, Pulev is hungry and he generally thinks he will hit him. Just stick with it on Saturday night, I can’t wait to put on a show, ”said Hughie Fury.
