Eyewitness Sophie Zermatten, 27, said: “I heard a lot of police sirens, so I looked for the sound. There was a large area cordoned off next to the Capitol Shopping Center and another area nearby.

“There were a lot of police cars and policemen. It looked like the incident was over by the time I got there, but it was clear that because of the sheer number of cops involved, something big or serious had happened. ”

Ms. Zermatten, who is studying a Masters in International Journalism, also reiterated what several other people had reported – she heard a « loud bang » in the area before the police swarmed downtown.

« I thought it was fireworks when I first heard them, » she added. “I was on Senghenydd Road when I heard them. ”

Another eyewitness said they were at the Ernest Willows Pub on City Road when the incident happened.

Courtney Cummings said, « I was in the Ernest Willows Wetherspoon pub when blue lights went by. I thought it was a normal police car but then I saw about 6 police cars and vans parked outside. « The bartender told everyone to pack and go. We asked him what happened and he said, ‘We heard what we thought were fireworks, but maybe it was gunfire. ‘. I went outside with my friend and saw all the police cars. I asked a policeman if the victim was okay as I was concerned and the policeman said they were in a stable condition, but they couldn’t provide any more information about what happened. «

Dixon Dominic Palett, 30, was at his apartment near Newport Road when he heard a lot of police sirens on Saturday night before looking out the window – and was shocked at what he saw.

He said, « I’m used to hearing sirens in the city center that live so close together – but the number of police cars and ambulances was way above the norm. « . “

« I looked out the window and could see that the police had blocked the road.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a man being cursed by police at the « top » of Queen Street – the area where the Sainsbury’s store is located.

25-year-old graduate student Elizabeth Winter was taking a stroll downtown when she saw a large police presence at the top of the city street.

She said, “A group of young men yelled at the police. There were about four or five officers who called back. I heard someone say someone was « cheffed » – street jargon for a stab. ”

Ms. Winter said the man with a laser treatment was white, in his mid-twenties and tall.
