Fulham confirmed the news on social media, writing: « We are devastated to hear the news tonight that Papa Bouba Diop has passed away at the age of 42.

Standing on an imposing 6 feet 5 inches, Man Mountain Diop was a cult hero with both the cottagers and Portsmouth, nicknamed « The Wardrobe » because of his size.

Diop was a crucial part of Harry Redknapp’s team in Portsmouth, which won the 2008 FA Cup.

He also played in England for West Ham – where he helped the club to promotion via the play-offs in 2012 – and for Birmingham City.

Diop was also part of the Senegalese team that shocked world champions France in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup.

He scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory that is still considered one of the biggest shocks in the history of the World Cup.

The terrible news from my former team-mate Papa Bouba Diop was a privilege today to share a changing room with him and such a nice man from the field, RIP big man #RIP

Devastated to have just read the news that Papa Bouba Diop has passed away. I didn’t know he was sick and at 42 he was taken too young. We had a good chuckle that I called him « The Man Mountain Himself » RIP Papa

O’Hara, who played with the Portsmouth midfielder, wrote: « The horrific news from my former teammate Papa Bouba Diop was a privilege today to share a dressing room with him and such a lovely man on the field. RIP great man. «

And Rosenior, who played in Fulham, added, « Papa Bouba Diop. Always smile. What a man. May his beautiful smile bless us from heaven.

Birmingham City, who played two games for Diop in 2012/13, wrote on Twitter: « We are devastated to learn that former player Papa Bouba Diop has passed away at the age of 42.

Surprisingly, Manchester United’s great Paul Scholes described The Wardrobe as one of his toughest opponents of all time.

He told Savage Social earlier this year, « There’s one more thing people won’t think about. We used to play Portsmouth.

« I always found it uncomfortable to play against him. He wasn’t a Vieira, of course not, but he still had talent. «
