The Christmas classic Fairytale of New York was named the nation’s most popular festival song in a poll published on Friday.
The 1987 classic never reached number one in the UK, but it was endorsed by 17% of those who have a favorite festive song – a nine percentage point lead over the second most popular song, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas, which was not reached first place when it was released.
Carey’s song took second place with 8% of the vote. However, the track proved to be the most popular with younger Brits, gaining 24% of the vote among 18- to 24-year-olds.
Third place was Last Christmas, published by George Michael and Wham! 1985 with 7% of the vote.
Last Christmas, the band Aids Do They Know It’s Christmas hit # 1 on the charts to raise money for the Ethiopian Famine Appeal. Wham! also donated all royalties from her song for the same appeal. Fairytale of New York hit the headlines in November when the BBC announced it would censor multiple pieces of text for fear of offending listeners.
A statement said: “We know the song is considered a Christmas classic and we will continue to play it this year. Our radio stations will select the version of the song that is most relevant to their audience. ”
For the past few years, people have been talking about the lines that refer to « an old bitch on trash » and « cheap lousy shit » and said that is not appropriate, despite 63% of respondents in a separate one YouGov According to the poll, Radio 1’s decision was wrong.
Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan previously defended the use of the lyrics, declaring in 2018 that they were meant to portray the character « on their luck » but were « not meant to be an insult ». .
Actor Lawrence Fox slammed the BBC because it decided to “beep” sections of the song and said, “The BBC’s culture commissioners tell you what is and is not appropriate for your ignorant little ears. Wouldn’t it be nice if we sent the (correct) version to the top of the charts? «
The Pogues, however, hit back on Twitter and replied to Fox with the words: « F *** off you little herrenvolk sh ***. ”
White Christmas, composed by Irving Berlin and performed by artists such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé, received 6% of the vote for fourth place in the YouGov poll, closely followed by Merry Christmas Everybody, originally from Slade, linked to Bing Crosby’s Silent Night, both at 5%.
In sixth place came Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas – also recently covered by Bublé – with 4% of the vote.

An emergency tightening of Covid restrictions could be announced on Saturday after Boris Johnson was presented with alarming new evidence that a mutated strain of virus could be transmitted. The Prime Minister convened an unscheduled meeting of senior ministers on Friday evening to discuss how to contain the new variant, which was previously largely confined to London and the south-east. Travel restrictions are among the measures under discussion, with one source suggesting that the government may even restrict travel between the southeast and other parts of the country. An alternative would be to ban commuters from entering London after the Kentish mutant strain quickly spread to London and then home countries.
Michel Barnier on Friday doubled Brussels’ call to link fishing rights to trade under the Brexit deal, warning the UK and the EU that they are in the « moment of truth » negotiations. Brussels wants the power to exclude British companies and in particular the fishing industry from the Brexit trade agreement and the single market if EU fishermen are excluded from British waters in the future. The EU negotiator said it was « unacceptable » for the UK to block access to British waters but retain the benefits of the trade deal with the bloc. He said it wasn’t « fair » or « honest ». Mr Barnier said: “The European Union must also keep its sovereign right to react or to compensate by adapting the conditions for products, and in particular fishery products, to the internal market. « And this is where we are currently facing one of the main hurdles in the negotiations – fisheries are an essential part of the economic partnership, » he said in the European Parliament in Brussels. London has always refused calls to link fisheries to trade because of the risk of retaliation, for example in the form of tariffs or the suspension of market access between the two agreements. However, Mr Barnier’s mention of « special » fishery products could point to a possible future compromise where tariffs in revenge on loss of access to British waters would only apply to fisheries.
Michel Barnier is trying to end the Brexit standstill with a new fisheries proposal. In the last few hours, the EU boss has responded to Boris Johnson’s request to Brussels to seal the deal
