Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Anthony Martial got sick overnight and excluded him from clash with Southampton on Sunday despite being with the squad.
The Frenchman, who is not yet in the Premier League this season, was a surprising omission on the United side. Mason Greenwood was brought into the starting XI to replace him.
But Solskjaer has put down fears that Martial sustained an injury, saying he stayed at the team hotel after an illness that is not believed to be a coronavirus.
« Anthony got sick overnight, » the United boss told MUTV. « So he’s alone in the hotel, poor boy. ‘
With several attack options to replace Martial, Solskjaer turned to teenage Greenwood, who signed Edinson Cavani that summer.
Solskjaer explained his thinking, “Edinson played well during the week but we felt Mason needed a game to get started. ‘
The only other change from United’s last Premier League game is that Donny van de Beek made his first league start after impressing in the Champions League mid-week.
Solskjaer insists that he has just given the former Ajax midfielder time to settle down and is confident he can make an impression against Southampton.
When asked if Van de Beek is ready, Solskjaer immediately replied: “Yes, definitely [Van de Beek is ready].
« He was good at the games he played so it never was » is it the Premier League or the Champions League? « , it gives him time to settle into the group. ‘
Van de Beek will play in a more advanced role with Nemanja Matic and Fred behind him, with Greenwood assisting Marcus Rashford with Bruno Fernandes at the helm.
