Kevin Phillips has claimed two-time PhD winner Nigel Pearson would be the ideal new Sunderland manager – and would be interested in the job.

The Black Cats legend speaks exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, and is certain that Pearson has the best references from potential candidates.

Danny Cowley is the current bookies favorite after publicly expressing his interest on Tuesday as this website revealed that former Bristol City manager Lee Johnson is a leading contender for the job.

Phillips suggested that 57-year-old Pearson would be an even better manager to take the reins.

The former English striker was run by Pearson in Leicester City and then joined his coaching staff when he hung up his boots.

« I said last time that I was absolutely keen to connect with Nigel if that was the case, » Phillips told Football Insider.

« I can’t speak for him, but I think he would be interested in the job in Sunderland. It’s a great job. He did a wonderful job at Leicester when they were in the minor leagues.

« He’s done it in Hull in the past too. He has more experience than any other candidate combined.

« Of course I think it would be a fantastic date. He’s a no-nonsense manager. He went in and ironed out any problems in the dressing room and he can take care of the board.

“It would just depend on whether the owners want such a manager in the football club. I would like to see him there. ”

The Black Cats sit in seventh place in the premier league before taking on Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson was sacked as coach last Sunday when the club is in the final stages of a takeover.
