Wales now has a national lockdown after a new strain of coronavirus emerges.
In a statement last night, Prime Minister Mark Drakeford said that the new strain « is far more contagious and spreading faster than the original. «
At a meeting of the Emergency Cabinet with First Ministers of Scotland and Northern Ireland and Michael Gove of the UK Government, it was announced that Wales would start its third national lockdown at midnight last night.
Coupled with the new restrictions introduced with the lockdown are changes to the rules for extended households during the Christmas season.
Given these new restrictions, you can and cannot do the following in Wales during the lockdown.
The national lockdown in Wales means thousands of people across the country are rethinking their Christmas plans.
Before the announcement, the extended budget rules were in effect from Wednesday, April 23. December, relaxed for a period of five days. However, this will no longer be the case.
Instead, two households – and one single-person household – are only allowed to form a Christmas bubble on Christmas Day.
At the end of yesterday’s trading, all non-essential retailers, close contact services, gyms and leisure centers, and the hospitality industry had to close.
It is not yet known how long they will have to be closed, but the definition of « essential » retailers and items has not changed since the fire lockdown.
Therefore, the stores that were allowed to remain open during this time can do so from today.
This is the strictest restriction and means that people are not allowed to form enlarged households.
From today’s perspective, people living in Wales can only mix with the people living in their household.
A support bubble can be created by single adults or single parents who wish to join another household.
Weddings and funerals can take place with limited numbers. The exact details of this are yet to be announced, but during the fire lockdown the number was 15.
