Sheffield United 0-1 West Ham: The hosts’ miserable run continued as Hammers moved into the top half of the table

A rare top goal from Sebastien Haller earned West Ham a win on Bramall Lane on Sunday, adding to the misery of Sheffield United.

United were the biggest surprise package last season on their return to the Premier League when they finished ninth, but Chris Wilder’s men have had a difficult second season at the highest level.

The Blades only have one point from their first nine games, with Haller’s goal in 56th. Minute from the edge of the box to a fourth straight loss and an eighth Premier League loss this season.

The Hammers, on the other hand, have 14 points from a tricky opening game in which they have already played against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool, and David Moyes’ team is in the top 10 as a result.

United got off to a good start when George Baldock Lukasz Fabianski worked with a driven near post bet. Fabianski then parried a low shot from Oli McBurnie before the Pole reacted quickly to deny David McGoldrick in the follow-up.

The visitors grew into the game and were under sustained pressure midway through the first half before Vladimir Coufal brought in a good block from Aaron Ramsdale.

The Hammers should have taken the lead after 34 minutes when Haller headed the ball in the penalty area onto Tomas Soucek’s path, but the midfielder was able to score with the goal. It was a huge disappointment for the hosts.

After a header from McBurnie, Fabianski made another good save shortly before the break. This time he threw the ball over the bar but it was West Ham who took the lead early in the second half.

Jarrod Bowen collected the ball in the half-turn after a clearance from Ramsdale and started a run towards central defense. He passed the ball to Pablo Fornals, whose shot was blocked at close range, but the ball bounced into Haller’s path, whose first attempt flew from the edge of the box into the roof of the net. Blades goalkeeper Ramsdale got a hand to the ball but couldn’t hold it.

Ivory Coast forward Haller has scored four goals in cup competitions this season, but his goal on Sunday was only his second Premier League goal this season and fourth in 2020.

Wilder’s side was suddenly all at sea and seemed in danger of admitting again. Coufal and Declan Rice saw shots valiantly blocked in a goal maw fight before Haller made another attempt.

The hosts had their best chance after 76 minutes, when substitute Rhian Brewster played a wonderful ball in McBurnie’s path from behind the West Ham defense. The Scot’s first touch was good, but in a duel with the goalkeeper he took the chance and shot against the crossbar.

It left the impression that it wasn’t going to be the Day of Blades, and it turned out to be the case as they slipped to yet another defeat.
