Emergency services were taken to Oakridge Road in the town of Lanarkshire after the alarm went off at around 6am this morning.
Firefighters made the area safe after the man and woman were placed in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: « At around 6am, emergency services were called to Cedars Grove, Bargeddie. Sunday 22nd. November 25th, after a report of a gas explosion on a property.
« The man has been treated and released. The woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow with serious injuries.
A spokesman for SFRS said, « We were called in at around 6am this morning for reports of an apartment fire in Coatbridge.
« Two victims, a man and a woman, have been placed in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.
« And we handed the premises over to Scottish Gas, Police Scotland and construction supervisors around 8am. «
