It wasn’t long before former Ohio State star Chase Young made an impact on the Washington Football team. And Washington Post’s Sam Fortier wrote that Young’s influence goes beyond molesting quarterbacks – he’s become one of the team’s leaders despite his youth.
« The end of the rookie defense didn’t mean this would happen, » wrote Fortier. « He didn’t want to be a locker room manager. He doesn’t ping-pong ping pong up and down the sidelines, chatting with teammates and coaches and the man holding the down marker for the show. ”
« It’s just me, » Young told The Post. « I really can’t sit down during the games. We play. I can’t sit down. ”
It’s going just as well in the field. Young was considered by many to be the top talent in the 2020 NFL Draft. Todd McShay, ESPN NFL Draft analyst, gave Young the only elite grade (96) in the class. And he supported that with 42 tackles, nine tackles against loss and 6. 5 sacks, nine quarterback hits and four forced fiddling. He also found two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown.
Pro Football Focus has Young by far as the best-rated defensive rookie. And considering that defensive linemen often make sizeable leaps as their experience grows – and as their bodies develop – Washington seems to have hit a home run with the well-done local product.
« Washington believes Young is a cornerstone of the franchise, » wrote Fortier. « There is hope that the Prince George’s County boy will wear the » C « on his jersey for a generation. ”
And Young knows he has to excel on the field to lead: « You can’t be loud and not play games. ”
« I haven’t been on cops since I came here, » said Young. “The boys only knew that because I was carrying my way through the building. I tried to let everyone know that I’m not into cops – and that I’m here to work. I am here to win games. ”
« It’s crazy unusual for a newbie to have the kind of leadership that Chase has. Real leadership, ”said Smith. “I think a lot of young people, especially high [draft] picks, I think they are feeling the pressure to do it somehow or somehow. I think Chase is so comfortable with himself and who he is. I think guys respect that, but it’s rare for such a young man to step in and influence his teammates as positively as he does. ”
« That’s where you see young people (making progress) when they are where they need to be, » said Rivera. “It was great for Kam Curl (and) Chase Young. These guys, these young players . . . when you see that of them, that’s big and that’s what we’re looking for in terms of evolution. ”
