World news – University of Maryland Medical System Holding COVID-19 Webinar

"Finding Hope on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day - A Town Hall to Understand the COVID-19 Vaccine" is scheduled for January 18th.

Almost a year after the global pandemic began, the COVID-19 virus is still raging in our country. Next Monday, the University of Maryland Medical System will mark the day of Dr. Recognize Martin Luther King Jr. with a Nationwide Virtual Conversation on Zoom, where multiple medical experts discuss COVID-19 vaccine issues, concerns, and issues. « Finding Hope on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day – A town hall to understand the COVID-19 vaccine « is planned for January 18 from 11:00 to 12:00. The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required at www.umms.org/findinghope. The City Hall will also be broadcast live on the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/umdmedcenter.

Freeman A. Hrabrowski III, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and participant in Clinical Moderna -University of Maryland School of Medicine vaccine study will moderate the event.

« Many of Dr. King’s topics on the right to primary health care, inclusion, and hope are particularly poignant and important as we continue fight COVID-19, « said Mohan Suntha, President and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System. « The vaccines give hope to save lives and end this pandemic.

» We are hosting this critical conversation to educate our communities about the impact this pandemic is having on all of us and to address questions and concerns about the vaccines, especially below Color communities to sort out, « added Suntha, who will host the event. “COVID is real and devastating. This discussion will provide hope and clarity on the path to ending COVID-19. “

Topics for discussion during town hall include Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, vaccine hesitation, safety and effectiveness, potential side effects, and the science behind messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, including how they encourage a response in individuals.

« To end COVID, it is imperative that we provide as much information as possible so that people can make informed decisions about the vaccine, » said Michelle Gourdine, interim chief medical officer and Senior Vice President of Population Health and Primary Services.

« There are some populations who have deep-seated health equity concerns and historical fears of experimentation and are reluctant to get the vaccine, » added Gourdine, a black man Doctor who is one of the town hall’s panelists. “Factual information about vaccines can dispel myths and concerns. Information is power. «

» I took part in the COVID-19 vaccine study because I believe in the science – and the scientists – behind it, « said Dr. Hrabrowski. “Growing up, I was very aware of the prejudice against black people in the medical and scientific communities. We need to recognize the need to put the work into rebuilding confidence, especially at a time when people with paint are dying at such high rates from COVID-19. It is significant that this vaccine was developed under the direction of Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett at the National Institutes of Health, a black woman who graduated from UMBC. She and her colleagues know the importance of rebuilding trust through a vaccine that can help society as a whole. “

Further UMMS activities on the occasion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. include hospitals that collect messages of hope from staff, record videos of hope for internal sharing, coordinate food drives and collections for personal and family affairs, and promote local and community activities. Volunteer opportunities.
