Syracuse, N.. . Y. . – Defensive end Hayden Nelson was fired from the Syracuse football team on Tuesday, the day before Early National Signing Day.

Nelson, a three-star prospect from Wisconsin, was one of five defense lawyers who verbally committed to Syracuse to be part of the 2021 school class.

In an announcement on Twitter, Nelson said that he and the Syracuse staff “decided it was in our best interest to evaluate other opportunities. ”

He thanked Syracuse’s trainer Dino Babers as well as defensive coordinator Tony White, defensive trainer Vinson Reynolds and the head of recruiting Kramer Cook.

Stephen Bailey of 247 Sports reported earlier in the day that Nelson had started to get interest from UCLA after the Bruins lost one of their defense line recruits to Notre Dame. Nelson is listed as a three star recruit on the 247 website. 8 players in Wisconsin and the No.. 70 Weakside Defensive End in the Country.

Nelson, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 248 pounds, was recently named the defensive / end linebacker for the First Team All-State in Wisconsin. He committed to Syracuse in May.

The Orange had a difficult season this year and only finished 1-10. Nelson is the first player to give up after his poor performance.

Tight End Aaron Hackett chose not to spend an extra year on eligibility, while a number of players have indicated that they will return for an extra year next season. That list included defenders Josh Black and Kingsley Jonathan as well as the Airon Servais offensive tackle.
