Shane Erickson, Inc. . Due to the possible presence of methanol, a substance widely used in the manufacture of fuel and antifreeze, a voluntary recall has been issued for three separate products.

The recalled hand sanitizers are « used for hand washing to reduce bacteria on the skin when soap and water are not available, » the FDA warning states. All products are packaged in a white opaque or clear plastic bottle with a blue, clear or black cap.

« Anyone who uses these products on their hands is at risk, » said the FDA, although those who take them either accidentally or as an alcohol substitute (ethanol) are at greatest risk of methanol poisoning.

The FDA has been adding to its continuously updated list since June when the agency saw an increase in hand sanitizers that allegedly contained ethanol but tested positive for methanol contamination.

The spoiled products were launched at an increased risk with more consumers relying on disinfectants during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the FDA, there are now over 220 products that consumers need to be careful of. In most cases, the toxic chemical won’t even appear on the label.

Most products contain ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, but have tested positive for methanol. 1-Propanol contamination was also found in some products. 1-Propanol should not be confused with 2-propanol / isopropanol / isopropyl alcohol, according to the FDA.

Both chemicals are « not an acceptable ingredient in hand sanitizer marketed in the US and can be toxic and life-threatening if ingested, » the agency said.

Substantial exposure to methanol, according to the FDA, can lead to nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, or death. Consumers who experience symptoms should seek « immediate treatment, » the agency said.

Meanwhile, the 1-propanol can cause central nervous system depression that can lead to death if ingested, the agency said. Symptoms of exposure to the toxic chemical may include confusion, impaired consciousness, and decreased heart rate and breathing.

Consumers should avoid using disinfectants from the listed manufacturers and properly dispose of all hand disinfectants on the list.

According to the notification, Shane Erickson is notifying its dealers and customers of the recall and arranging for the affected products to be returned.

To date, the company has received no reports of side effects from the recalled hand sanitizers.
