For the first time in seven years, a former Maryland-based men’s basketball player was chosen as a sweepstakes pick.
Jalen Smith striker was turned down. 10 overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2020 NBA draft Wednesday night.
Smith is the fourth former Maryland men’s basketball player to have been recruited in the past three years, following in the footsteps of Kevin Hoyter, Justin Jackson and Bruno Fernando..
He was expected to move anywhere from 13th place overall to the end of the first round at a later time, but instead cemented himself as a top 10 pick. Coincidentally, Smith went on to the same franchise that Lynne penned.
The Baltimore native was named to the All-American Third Team and unanimously selected the first All-Big Ten team after averaging 15. 5 points, 10. 5 rebounds and 2. 4 blocks per game for Terps as a student in the last year. Front Shot 6’10 53. 8% off the floor and 36. 8% of the three-point range, with the third largest number of doubles (21) in the country.
Many expected Smith, who was a five-star recruiter outside of high school, to enter enlistment after his new season, but chose to return to College Park after the team suffered a heartbreaking defeat against LSU in the final seconds of their game in the second round of NCAA 2019.
Although he and Terps didn’t get a chance to recover March Madness due to the coronavirus pandemic, the decision definitely paid off, as Smith increased his stock of drafts to serve as a lottery pick in this year’s NBA draft.
Smith joins a rookie team in Phoenix, which has just added all-star goalkeeper Chris Paul earlier this week..
