COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A person’s obligation to withdraw from the use of force has been eliminated in Ohio under a gun law signed by the Republican government. Mike DeWine on Monday despite the governor’s vocal concern that GOP lawmakers were ignoring his own laws proposed after the 2019 Dayton mass shootings.

The measure extends the so-called « stand your ground » directly from a person’s house and car to any place, « when that person is in a place where the person has a legitimate right to be. « . ”

As recently as last month, DeWine hinted that he could veto the bill, saying lawmakers should focus on what it sent them instead. But on Monday he signed the bill in a spirit of cooperation with the General Assembly.

« I look forward to working with lawmakers in the future to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and protect the rights of citizens who obey the law, » DeWine said.

He said he was disappointed that lawmakers hadn’t added the measures he was seeking in more than a year to tighten background controls and increase penalties for offenders who use guns to commit new crimes.

The governor has been pushing these proposals since August. 4, 2019, Dayton Massacre that killed nine people and injured more than two dozen.

Nan Whaley, the Democratic Mayor of Dayton and occasional ally of the governor, said she « could not express my disappointment » and accused him of indulging in extremists within his own party. Shortly after the Dayton shooting, she and DeWine promised to work together on a bipartisan effort to change gun laws.

« Our state needs principled leaders who stand up for what is right – not what is politically easy, » Whaley tweeted.

« That’s not what people meant when they asked us to do something after the fatal mass shootings in Dayton last year, » Yuko said in a tweet.

« Only cowards would pass and sign a bill that has been shown to disproportionately harm blacks, » added Sykes, who is black.

The Buckeye Firearms Association praised the move, saying DeWine made multiple public and private promises with the association to sign the bill.

« We are delighted that the governor has kept his promise to sign the Ohio Waiver, which will force victims of violent crime to withdraw before they can legally defend themselves, » said Dan Rieck, group executive director director.

Rep. Kyle Koehler, a Republican from Springfield who campaigned for the change, also noted that DeWine’s action held a promise to pass the law. He called the measure a simple solution to the existing law « that will protect law-abiding gun owners. ”

Ohio turns 36. State with a similar measure, said two Republican supporters, Sen state. . Tim Schaffer of Lancaster and State Sen.. . Terry Johnson of McDermott in southern Ohio.
