Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world
It’s a rare treat to get live golf on a Tuesday afternoon, even more so when it involves some of the best players in the world (and of all time). Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas will tee it up against Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose in an exhibition at the Payne’s Valley Cup in Missouri to showcase Tiger’s latest architectural work (and first public course design). All four are coming off varying degrees of success at this year’s U.S. Open at Winged Foot — Rose and Woods missed the cut, Thomas and McIlroy finished in the top 20 — so the four-hour exhibition should be both relaxing for them and enjoyable viewing for all of us.
And hey, any time you get to see Tiger tee it up these days it has to be considered a treat given how up and down his last decade has been. Hopefully we also get to see him talk his way through a course he designed as well. His knowledge of both course construction, as well as golf itself, is world class. All four players will be mic’d up throughout the day, which should be a delight as long as they’re loose enough to chat back and forth about their games and the golf course.
CBS Sports will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest scores, updates and highlights below.
JT birdies No. 14 to get to all square with Rory after Rory lips out birdie on the same hole. JT was trash talking the entire time, telling Rory, « You hate to see it. » I, on the other hand, love to see all of it.
JT saying that watching Cat score and get around when he doesn’t have his best stuff is the coolest was itself very cool.
Unreal birdies from Rory and Tiger on that 653-yard hole. They’re both 1 up in their singles matches, which means the entire match is 2-2.

A 653-yard par-5 does not sound all that fun. Tiger is tight on his third though.

I hope the tiebreaker for a 2-2 tie today is a long drive contest off the roof of the lodge against Bryson.
Americans win the alternate shot after Rory makes par. 1-1 heading to the singles matches where there are 2 points available.
Last hole of alternate shot, and Rose hits a bad chip into the par 4 leaving Rory with a long birdie putt. Tiger has a straightforward chip and leaves JT with a kick-in to probably win the hole.

We are all square on alternate shot through four of the six holes. Love the pace so far here. Aspirational.
