Chris Rock took to the Studio 8H stage as the first Saturday Night Live studio host since the show moved away at the end of last season The comics used their time to address Trump’s recent COVID-19 diagnosis, the show’s return to its traditional format, and the current political climate during this year’s election cycle
« Before we even start, [let’s talk about] the elephant in the room President Trump is in the COVID hospital, and, you know, I just mean my heart is going to COVID, » Rock said in laughing
Taking that out, Rock went on to explain how the series managed to have an audience while remaining safe
« Every member of this audience has been vetted, and all week I’ve been having problems Every day I come here, » said Rock « I haven’t had that much stuff up my nose since I started shared a locker room with Chris Farley «
He also explained that the audience was almost entirely made up of first responders, which means « We are letting people die tonight so they can see a good show! »
The standing comedian and former SNL cast member spent his monologue joking about the divisions in current politics, but he ended his monologue with a powerful quote from James Baldwin: « All That Confronts cannot be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced «
