EAST RUTHERFORD, N. J. The New York Giants sacked offensive line coach Mark Colombo after a bad verbal confrontation with coach Joe Judge, ESPN sources reported, and replaced him with his longtime NFL assistant Dave DiGuglielmo. .
“We appreciate what Mark did, but I felt the move was in the best interest of the team,” the judge said in a statement issued by the team on Wednesday..
When Colombo was told of a plan by the judge to hire DeGuglielmo as a counselor on Tuesday night, it didn’t turn out well..
Colombo disagreed with the move and felt undermined, a source told ESPN, due to Diagoulemo’s background as an offensive line coach. Another source added that the practical judge wanted to bring in « one of his comrades » to seize more control in a position that was not his experience. .
Despite a lot of insults, Colombo and Judge did not quarrel, as one report indicated. A spokesman for the Giants said the report of a physical altercation was « completely false in every respect. ».
The move to send Colombo off came as a surprise given that the Giants’ attack streak had shown improvement in recent weeks. The Giants have pushed over 150 yards in each of their last three matches.
Colombo was hired by this off-season judge to work under former Colombo chief Jason Jarrett, attack coordinator. Colombo was previously a direct coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
But Judge has been more involved in recent weeks working with the Giants offensive line.
DeGuglielmo was an assistant frontline / quality control coach with the Giants from 2004 to 2008. He also worked with a judge in New England when he trained the Patriots offensive line in 2014 and 15.
Colombo, 42, played 10 years in the NFL for the Chicago Bears, Cowboys and Miami Dolphin. He has worked as a cowboy assistant for each of the previous four seasons.
One of the most important jobs in Colombo was working with Young Attack Giants. Three of their first five picks for this year’s draft were Offensive Line Men, including No.. 4 comprehensive selection of Andrew Thomas. Fifth round pick Shane Lemieux was recently included in the starting lineup, and third round pick Matt Peart was rotated in.
“We sat down, had conversations with Andrew, and talked about moving [his style] from the training field to the game.. « That’s what he did recently, » Colombo said last week.. « He has a new atmosphere of confidence. In the past two weeks he has played really well. Its timing was better. His sets of passes were better. Preventing it running was better. We just have to keep growing. I’ve noticed that Andrew has been more confident in the past few weeks.
