In HBO’s latest documentary, we learn a strange piece of history when a preacher who handles snakes tried to murder his wife with the snakes he kept on his property. At 4. October 1991, Darlene Summerford was bitten on the hand twice by a rattlesnake or snakes after her husband Glenn Summerford forced her to put her hand in a cage of snakes. He falsely accused her of running around on him with another preacher. Glenn, a pastor of the Church of Jesus with Signs in Scottsboro, allegedly accused her of betraying him.

The documentary also addresses a phenomenon that many viewers may not know exists in America – churches that use snakes as part of their worship rituals. These rituals are particularly popular in the Appalachian region, but how did they come about, are they legal, and why do these snakes not seem to bite the preachers – apparently proving that these preachers are « divine »?

It is believed that George Went Hensley began dealing with snakes in the summer of 1909 in a remote part of southeast Tennessee. Century began and later founded the Church of God with the following signs. His beliefs and practices spread throughout North Carolina and the southern Appalachians, as well as parts of the Midwest, where many unemployed mountain people had moved to find work.

Academic studies, however, deny that Hensley initiated the practice and that claims that Hensley was the originator of snake handling are usually unfounded by research and the origins of the observation are unclear. The researchers also suggest that the beginnings of Pentecostal serpent handling rituals cannot be attributed to a single person and that observance occurred independently on multiple occasions. They agree, however, that Hensley helped spread the Pentecostal snake handling throughout the southeastern United States, and that coverage of Hensley’s ministry had an impact on encouraging various churches to include the practice in their services.

According to those who handle snakes, the traders are obsessed with the power of the divine spirit. If you’ve been bitten, they lack true spirit. However, the church prays over them – if they die, then God intended it to be. Several Bible verses are used by serpent leaders to confirm their beliefs and practices, most notably Mark 16: 17-18 which says, « And these signs will follow those who believe; in my name they will cast out devils; they will come with speak to them. « new tongues, they will receive snakes, and if they drink something deadly it will not harm them, they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover. « Snake handlers view these words as commands, not just suggestions. They believe that these words are binding on all who profess to believe in the Gospels: God takes over their capacities and enables them to carry out God’s instructions without harming themselves. For the Church of God with Signs the belief is that snakes are incarnations of demons. So, if a member of the Church really has the Holy Spirit within, they should be able to handle poisonous snakes – as well as drink poison and not suffer harm.

A typical worship service is quite energetic and involves a lot of dancing, singing, preaching, and speaking in tongues. The snakes are kept behind the pulpit, and the species used range from rattlesnakes, cottonmouth, and copper heads, although cobras have been used. Church members can approach and pick up the serpents to show their power over the demons. It is common to lift the snakes in the air, dance around with them, and even allow them to crawl on their bodies. Church members can also drink poison, most commonly strychnine, if they wish.

According to an NPR report that included opinions from snake experts, it is likely that a snake’s reluctance to bite a religious snake trader has more to do with the creature’s poor health than with supernatural interference. « The animals I saw that came from religious snake dealers were in poor condition, » Kristen Wiley told NPR. Wiley is the curator of Kentucky Reptile Zoo, a facility in the City of Slade that produces venom and promotes the protection of snakes. She continued, « They had no water. The cages hadn’t been cleaned for a long time. And the other thing we noticed is that there were eight or ten copper heads in a not very large container. « 

She also said there was no fecal material in the cages, indicating that the snakes were not fed. Riley said that a snake that might be dehydrated, underweight, and sick is less likely to strike than a healthy snake. In addition, the poison it produces is weaker. She added that when dealing with snakes who do not care for their snakes, preachers « prepare for a safer encounter during their worship service if they use a snake that is in poor condition. ». « 

Some states have passed laws that prohibit or restrict the use of snakes to trained individuals. No case about the practice has reached the Supreme Court. State courts have consistently upheld state laws as adequate health and safety regulations, such as the Kentucky Court of Appeals at Lawson v. Commonwealth (1942) and the Alabama Court of Appeals at Hill v. State (1956). The Tennessee Supreme Court upheld a similar law in Harden v. State (1948). In Harden, the court cited the distinction that the U. . S.. . The Supreme Court had Davis v. Beason (1890), Reynolds v. USA (1879) and Cantwell v. Connecticut (1940), between the regulation of religious belief and action. The Tennessee Supreme Court ruled in Swann v. Pack (1975) upheld an injunction banning members of a church from handling snakes and extended it to include drinking strychnine.
