Former Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend has assisted Jack Grealish to become an automatic pick on the English starting line-up.

The Villa man impressed again on the international stage during the last international break and impressed in all three English games against Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

Grealish’s form for Villa this season resulted in Gareth Southgate giving him a bigger chance.

« I think it’s starting to get to the point where I’m supposed to stop tossing the coin for Gareth Southgate and have to play Grealish, » he told Goal .

« How he can carry the ball, how he can travel across the ground, in international football you can’t just attack and defend. England is a bit like that.

« You could do it with someone who would just hold on to it and connect the team so the team could hold the ball and wait for the right moment and do something in the final third.

« They have so much energy, pace and skill on the front lines, but they have no one very much like Grealish.

« You could do something with someone like him. You would have better games with him in games against better teams because he holds the ball very well. «

The three caps during the international break have taken Grealish to a total of five caps in an English jersey since his debut in September.

The striker has five goals and six assists in all competitions for Villa this season and will add to that when he welcomes Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League this afternoon.
