BYU and Utah Valley may only be five miles apart, but the two programs are much closer together.

BYU coach Mark Pope came to Provo after four years as coach of the Wolverines, and BYU has three former Utah Valley players (Brandon Averette, Richard Harward and Wyatt Lowell) on the roster. On Saturday night, Utah Valley had two former cougars (Colby Leifson and Blaze Neild) on the bench at the Marriott Center.

Known players at both ends made BYU play the toughest, most physical game of the week, but the Cougars won 82-60 and improved to 3-0 that season.

The game started a little slowly for both teams – the Cougars missed their first seven 3-point attempts and shot less than 30% off the field – but the Wolverines prevailed first, taking BYU 9-0 ahead by 10 points in the middle of the first half.

Under the leadership of Senior Alex Barcello, the Cougars finished half with a 30-6 run. Barcello made 14 of those points in 5-of-8 shooting (4 of 5 of 3).

The senior finished the game with 20 points at team level as well as seven rebounds and three assists.

One day before the cross-town clash, the cougars received some news that put the team in a kind of break-in.

Junior Gavin Baxter is out with an ACL and meniscus injury sustained in the last game. Since this season is free for everyone and Baxter has played less than a third of the season’s games, he can play as a junior again next season.

In Baxter’s place, the real newcomer Caleb Lohner started. Purdue Transfer Matt Haarms also finally made his BYU debut.

Haarms skipped the first two games of the season with a sore ankle and only had his first full training session in weeks on Friday.

After the Cougars got their funk back, the momentum continued into the second half. And BYU quickly started putting the game down. Haarms was an important part of the success in the second half, scoring five points in a row. The graduate transfer ended with 10 points at 80% shooting from the field.

BYU led by up to 22 points in the second half, but Utah Valley took the lead 12-0 to stay in the game. The Cougars were able to adapt, however, and the Wolverines ran out of gas.

The Wolverines were led by Trey Woodbury, who scored 24 Utah Valley points on 10-of-17, and Jamison Overton, who shot 46% off the field and 75% from the free throw line for 19 points.
