The actress Carol Sutton, who appeared in « Steel Magnolias » and « Queen Sugar », died on Thursday evening of the consequences of Covid-19. She was 76 years old.
The actress spent her final months in Touro Infirmary in her hometown of New Orleans, where she was being treated for the virus.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell confirmed Sutton’s death and recalled the late actor in a statement released Friday. « Carol Sutton was practically the Queen’s theater of New Orleans after decades of taking to the city’s stages, » she wrote. “The world may recognize her by her appearances in films and on television – be it ‘Treme’ or ‘Claws’ or ‘Runaway Jury’ or ‘Queen Sugar’ – but we will always remember her commanding stage presence, her rich portrayed characters and the warm heart she shared with her colleagues and her crew in productions like « 4000 Miles » and « A Raisin in the Sun ». Sutton appeared in an episode of « Queen Sugar » in Louisiana and played sister Pam in the 1989 comedy film « Steel Magnolias » with Sally Field and Dolly Parton. More recently, she has had roles in « True Detective » and « Lovecraft Country ». ”
Since debuting in Dashiki Project Theater productions in the late 1960s, Sutton has appeared on stages across New Orleans in productions such as « The Last Madam, » « Native Tongues, » and « A Raisin in the Sun ». ”
She made her on-screen debut in 1974 with « The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman » and has appeared in the films « Monster’s Ball », « Ray » and « The Help », among others.
