COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA. (AP) – The Los Angeles Chargers have sacked manager Anthony Lynn less than two seasons after leading the franchise to the playoffs.

Lynn is the sixth NFL coach to be laid off this season, along with Bill O’Brien of Houston, Dan Quinn of Atlanta, Matt Patricia from Detroit, Adam Gase of the New York Jets and Doug Marrone of Jacksonville.

Los Angeles won their last four games 7-9, but it wasn’t enough to save Lynn’s job.

« I’m not sure there is any other person in this league more respected as a person than Anthony, » owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. “This is a results-driven business and, to put it simply, the results for the past two years have not lived up to expectations. ”

Lynn was hired by the Chargers in January 2017 and became the first black head coach in franchise history. He went 34-32 with Los Angeles but only 12-20 in the last two seasons. He still had one year of contract.

Los Angeles started Lynn’s first season 4-0 in 2017, but ended 9-7 after winning six of their last seven games. That served as a stepping stone until 2018 when Chargers 12-4 went, which was synonymous with the best record in the AFC.
