ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) – Governor Walz will make a decision this week whether or not to extend Minnesota’s final COVID-19 hiatus, which expires on Friday.

The four-week break, enacted last month by order of the governor, banned indoor service for bars and restaurants, closed gyms, and restricted social gatherings.

The order came when a COVID-19 spike was raging in Minnesota. But it also came at a critical time of year for many companies that had already been badly hit by the pandemic.

Governor Walz says his team will continue to review the latest data before making a final decision on whether to continue the restrictions.

Much at stake for business owners if the expansion continues. But they are also looking out for a special session due to start on Monday where lawmakers could pass an aid package to help workers and companies in trouble.

Jesse Pfliger, the owner of Nonna Rosa in Robbinsdale, says this final round of restriction hit his employees particularly hard.

« We have single mothers who work for me and say, » I don’t even know where the next paycheck is coming from, « said Pfliger.

He hopes heads of state will come up with a plan to help workers and companies that are feeling marginalized. « We really need to get our lawmakers to fund the business in question, but not just corporations. Really the employees and all the people. «

« Part of me is confident we will open because I would love to see everyone and it would be great I think as a company, » said Kiersten Latowski, owner of Northeast Fitness.

Latowski hopes to see her members back soon, but knows some won’t be back for a while, even though it may open next week.

Legislators will get back to work on Monday, while Walz’s decision to possibly continue the break may not be made until Wednesday.
