World News – USA – Crock-Pot Recalls Nearly 1 Million Pressure Cookers Due to Risk of Burns

While you’re preparing Thanksgiving dinner, you might be tempted to reach for one of the handiest kitchen utensils available. I’m talking about the crock pot, of course. Unfortunately, a terribly timed recall from Sunbeam Crock-Pots can throw a wrench into your meal prep plans.

The recall, announced in a bulletin published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, concerns Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker. The reason the product is being recalled is because of a possible defect in the lid that could ultimately result in burns or other serious injury to people standing nearby. Nearly a million crock-pot units are in this recall, and dozens of people have already been injured by the product defect.

Unlike many recalls where a product defect was discovered before problems were reported to the public, these particular models of crock-pots have been held responsible for 99 reports of « first to third degree burn injuries ». « This is of course incredibly serious, and in total there have been 119 reports of ‘lid peeling’, which means that in 20 cases no one was around and injuries avoided.

Consumers should stop using the recalled crock-pot in pressure cooker mode immediately, but can still use it for slow cooking and frying. Consumers should contact Crock-Pot immediately for a free replacement lid. Consumers who continue to use the multicooker in pressure cooker mode while waiting for the replacement lid should ensure that the lid is securely rotated to the fully locked position by aligning the arrow on the lid with the lock symbol on the base.

The stoves have been sold in Walmart and Target stores (including Amazon), among others, and 914 in total. 430 units were sold in the US, with another 28. 330 were shipped to Canada. This recall is for the Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker, model number SCCPPC600-V1 found on the label on the bottom of the unit. The multi-cookers were used between 1. July 2017 and 1. Manufactured October 2018 with date codes K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN. The date code is engraved on one of the prongs of the electrical connector and on the underside of the base.
