. . World News – USA – Dole Issues Romaine Limited Recall Via E.. coli concerns

. . CHECK YOUR REFRIGERATOR: Just before Thanksgiving, Dole remembers romaine lettuce, which may have been stained by E.. coli. Products have been shipped to more than a dozen states, including Arizona.

. .

Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. . is the second company in two weeks to voluntarily recall a portion of its romaine lettuce just before Thanksgiving for fear of being contaminated with E.. coli.

Dole’s announcement comes just a week after Tanimura & Antle Inc. . voluntarily recalled his one-headed romaine lettuce because of fears that his lettuce might have been tainted by the bacteria. Both recalls were released almost exactly a year after an E break before Thanksgiving. Coli tied to California lettuce sickened hundreds of consumers and led to a blanket warning against romaine lettuce.

However,

Dole’s recall only covers a « limited number of cases of organic Romaine hearts, » according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notice. .

Affected are the Organic Romaine Hearts 3pk with the UPC code 0-71430-90061-1 and the Wild Harvest Organic Romaine Hearts with the UPC code 7-11535-50201-2. Both packages have « harvested-on » dates from Oct.. . 23 and Oct. . 26, 2020.

Affected products have been shipped to more than a dozen states in 12-ounce bags. This includes Arizona, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Virginia.

« However, these products were harvested and packaged almost 4 weeks ago and should no longer be on sale, » the company said.

The recall began after a pack of Dole Organic Romaine Hearts tested positive for E.. coli during routine checks by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

To date, Dole has not reported any illnesses related to the recall. However, the bacteria can cause diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, and vomiting, the FDA said.

U. . S.. . Health officials called for an end to the 2019 outbreak in January after 167 people fell ill in 27 states, the CDC said. Nobody died, but 85 people were hospitalized, including 15 people who developed some form of kidney failure.

Another outbreak that occurred in the spring of 2018 sickened more than 200 people and killed five more. This outbreak was attributed to spoiled irrigation water near a livestock property. E.. . coli occurs in the feces of animals such as cows.

It’s not clear why Romaine keeps showing up in outbreaks, but food safety experts note the popularity of romaine lettuce and the difficulty of eliminating the risk for products grown in the open fields and consumed raw.
