World News – USA – Gucci x The North Face is here – and it’s perfect for dressing up in lockdown

. .

It’s possible to temporarily put a runaway global pandemic aside on a gloomy Monday in January if you turn up the volume loud enough on Gucci x The North Face’s short « Off the Grid » video. I know because I did it this morning and hummed happily in a completely unexpected way.

With a group of photogenic hikers climbing the Alpine peaks in blinding summer sunshine to the upbeat sounds of Creedence Clearwater, the film is wonderfully uplifting. And oh, the clothes. Packed with quirky floral skirts, prints inspired by The North Face collections from the seventies, vibrant jackets in primary colors, and outdoor versions of Gucci’s famous monogram jackets and bucket hats, it’s hiking gear like you’ve never seen it before.

The collection is from today at Selfridges and from 22. Available from Gucci January. com (with winners of the Christmas raffle who get the first dibs on the goods). However, this is online shopping with a twist: instead of browsing the regular Selfridges website, you need to make an appointment here. After that, you’ll have a designated amount of time to visit a Selfridges virtual corner shop with a personal shopper guiding you through the Dresses website. The same service will be offered in selected Gucci stores from the end of January.

Today’s dates are already sold out, which shouldn’t be too surprising. After a year in which so much of the usual designer tariff has become obsolete (aside from having something nice to look at) this is a collaboration that I want to wear now rather than at some indefinite point in the future, at which we were all vaccinated.

Therefore, the outerwear for this new collection will likely sell out first. It is based on The North Face’s original designs from the seventies, which fit perfectly with Alessandro Michelle’s own love for the decade that contributed to its distinctive aesthetic.

Although they may find you a strange couple at first (Italian fashion and a sportswear brand? Really?), it actually makes sense. Not only has Gucci ditched the fashion calendar in favor of semi-annual seasonless collections, but it has also made advances toward carbon neutrality and even released campaign videos on the importance of recycling and renewal, including one with explorer David de Rothschild.

Meanwhile, The North Face has announced its efforts to reduce the impact of apparel manufacturing on the environment through the use of a new nylon fabric made from regenerated materials used in this collection.

Aesthetically, the collaboration couldn’t be better in terms of time. If I had to choose one fashion item that emerged triumphantly from a winter of lockdowns, it would be the duvet cover and all of the deliciously soothing imagery that is in the name. For most of us, quilted coats are the only item of clothing we currently show the outside world and there is a huge appetite for well-made, well-tailored designs.

At “Off the Grid” there are fashionable, goose feather-filled, padded jackets and coats that we lived in this year, as well as windbreakers, quilted gilets and cozy fleeces that have all become a de facto uniform in a winter of socializing outdoors.

Available in ballet slipper pink, tangerine orange, and sugary brown, as well as a new range of floral and art prints designed by Gucci and The North Face, they are really beautiful to look at. And considering that the Rounds of the Park are our red carpets for now, they are also the best chance for fashion audiences to show off their style traits.

The accessories are also noteworthy, including two backpacks from the seventies, some knitted bobble hats, monogrammed bucket hats, and a pair of lined leather hiking boots. Oh, and when the world opens up again there is even a tent and sleeping bag that you may or may not use to win popularity points at the local campsite.

Could this collection point to a new, healthier future for hikers like me too? Years ago while living in Hong Kong I agreed to meet a group of friends for a walking tour and lunch. I focused on the day’s lunch, showed up in floral print pants and was very mocked for the rest of the morning. I didn’t go hiking much after that, but maybe I just needed a little Gucci to get myself up these mountains. . .
