World News – USA – Jon ‘Boog’ Sciambi is the new Cubs play-by-play broadcaster

Len Kasper left the Marquee Sports Network and the Chicago Cubs a month ago to take the Chicago White Sox radio job. The move was shocked by Cubs fans, who over the years adored Kasper as they called games for the team. Several possible replacements have been rumored for Kasper, with Fox’s Chris Myers being the most closely related.

Today Marquee announced the replacement of Kasper, and while it’s not Myers, it’s another veteran play-by-play broadcaster for a national network: ESPN’s Jon Boog Sciambi.

Here are a number of quotes from the press release about Sciambi hiring Crane Kenney of the Cubs, Mike McCarthy and Jim Santini of Marquee, and Sciambi himself.

« Having the opportunity to come to Wrigley Field every day and call games for the Chicago Cubs is surreal, » Sciambi said. « It really doesn’t get any better. Chicago is one of the best cities and Wrigley is the best baseball field out there. ”

« Jon’s deep baseball knowledge, coupled with his dry sense of humor and quick wit, will no doubt bring a new level of entertainment to Cubs fans when they watch Cubs play on Marquee starting in the 2021 season, » noted Marquee Sports Network SVP from Programming & Production Mike Santini. “We are very happy to have him. ”

Notable: Sciambi is staying with ESPN calling select MLB regular season games on TV, radio, and college basketball. Dan Shulman has a similar role on the network after leaving Sunday Night Baseball after the 2017 season. Shulman still cites some regular MLB games of the season for ESPN on TV and radio and calls college basketball games while also serving as the Toronto Blue Jays play-by-play broadcaster.

At Marquee, Sciambi will work on the booth with established Cubs analyst Jim Deshaies. The Cubs will also have a rotating cast of guest broadcasters calling in games, similar to what they did in 2020, including Myers and a number of ex-player analysts including Ryan Dempster, Mark DeRosa, Dan Plesac and Carlos Pena of MLB Network, Rick Sutcliffe and Doug Glanville (former Sciambi partners at ESPN), Sean Marshall, Ryan Sweeney and Lou Piniella. Taylor McGregor and Elise Menaker return as field reporters, and Cole Wright returns as Marquee’s principal studio host.

When Kasper made his decision to leave Marquee, I was skeptical that the network could find a suitable replacement that fans would leave behind. Incredible, Marquee not only did it, but possibly upgraded it with Sciambi on the booth. I’m giving my cap to the network for rent
