Reporting on the impact of the coronavirus on the sports world
Hugh Freeze’s viability as a candidate coach for the SEC position was checked with the South Carolina conference before the program finally hired Shane Beamer, two sources close to the situation, report CBS Sports. It is believed that Freeze would pass exam by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who will have to evaluate and approve his hiring when he returns to the league.
Freeze is set to be Auburn’s top contender after coach Gus Malzahn was sacked after eight seasons.
Sankey reportedly « encouraged » Alabama not to hire Freeze as an assistant three years ago. While Freeze’s name didn’t appear on the NCAA’s institutional troubles report at Ole Miss, he was the head coach of the controversial and violent rebel program.
Freeze was not only conspicuous for Ole Miss with his outstanding 2015 season (10-3, 6-2 SEC) and the associated high-ranking recruitment, but also rose to 39-25 (6-21 SEC) eyebrows. Recruitment and academic violations resulted in the NCAA imposing substantial penalties on the rebels who were forced to vacate 27 victories.
Freeze resigned from Ole Miss prior to the 2017 season after research found the university called escort services using a school-provided cellphone over a five-year period.
After leaving, he was unemployed for two years before being hired by Liberty. Freeze has led the Flames to a 17-6 record in two seasons, with a 9-1 mark in 2020.
