PISCATAWAY, N. . J. . (AP) – Michigan had to switch quarterbacks, work three hours overtime and play for about 4 1/2 hours to avoid the worst start to the football program in 53 years. It was worth it.
Hassan Haskins finished fourth in extra time from less than a meter away and the Wolverines lost three games by overtaking Rutgers 48-42 on Saturday night.
« This win means a lot, » said defender Chris Hinton. « It is the first step to get back on track. We didn’t quit. We just kept swinging. ”
The guy who took the biggest hits was second quarterback Cade McNamara, who replaced starter Joe Milton late in the second quarter. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another when Michigan (2-3, 2-3 Big Ten) presented Rutgers (1-4, 1-4) with his fourth straight loss.
« Cade was brilliant, » said Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who came under fire with his team and had the worst start in his six-year tenure. « Really gritty. Really gritty performance in every way. His play was inspiring. I can’t say enough great things. ”
Michigan missed the 2-point conversion after Haskins touchdown, but safety Daxton Hill intercepted Noah Vedone’s desperate move from the 24-yard line to the end zone to end the game.
It was the second week in a row that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano put his team in the lead in the second half.
« There were a lot of people who were really badly injured, » said Schiano. “Needless to say, some people in the field really lost their courage. You know we’re not there yet. We’re just not quite there yet. And we’ll keep chopping and keep working. We will get there. ”
Vedral tossed Aron Cruickshank down an 11-yard touchdown pass, then put two defenders in the end zone on the 2-point remodel to finish the game at 35 and force the extra sessions.
Both teams missed overtime in their first possession. Vedral threw a 25-yard touchdown pass at Jovani Haskins to give Rutgers a 42-35 lead, but McNamara scored a 2-yard run to tie the game.
McNamara finished 27 of 36 for 260 yards. The second year had TD passes of 46 and 9 yards to Cornelius Johnson, 8 yards to Nick Eubanks, and a 6-yarder to Mike Sainristil.
« We got our bravado back a little, especially on the offensive, » said McNamara. « It feels good to come out with a win. ”
Vedral was 29 of 43 and passed with three touchdowns for 378 yards. Johnny Langan ran for two touchdowns and Val Ambrosio scored two field goals, but missed a potential game-winning 45-yarder in the first OT.
Giles Jackson had a 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to spark a great second half that helped Michigan break an early 17-0 deficit.
Michigan: Harbaugh has a new quarterback. While McNamara doesn’t have Milton’s mobility, he has a great arm and makes smart decisions with the ball. The Wolverines make it back home twice next week with a game against winless Penn State (0-5). . No Nittany Lions squad has ever lost their top five.
Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights were competitive in Schiano’s second stint as coaches, and this was another. You just have to find a way to get over the hump. This is the second straight week that they have had an advantage in the second half.
