A few hours after the Michigan women’s basketball team dispatched Northwestern, the men did the same. Both teams are undefeated.
The Michigan men played in front of a small crowd at the Crisler Center for the first time this season, crushing the Wildcats 85-66 on Sunday night.
Michigan (9-0, 4-0) finished the first half strong and brought the momentum into the second half, led by 29. Five Wolverines posted double-digit results and Michigan dominated the 3-point battle to remain the Big Ten’s only undefeated team.
Northwestern, No.. 19, fell to 6-3 (3-2). It was the first time in the 175 meetings between the Wildcats and Wolverines that both teams were featured in the leaderboard. Michigan numbers rise from No.. 16 in the poll on Monday after winning in Maryland on Thursday.
The numbers suggest the wildcats would be successful from a distance of 3 points. You did 10 3s per game on a 41 percent clip. They shot only 5 out of 18 (28 percent) on Sunday. Michigan, meanwhile, lit it from below, going 12 versus 27 (44 percent). .
Freshman Hunter Dickinson scored 19 points, including 15 in the second half. Sophomore Franz Wagner scored 14 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double career. Senior Eli Brooks scored 14, including a 4-of-5 mark from the deep. Senior Chaundee Brown added 14 points from the bench.
Michigan scored three triples in a row to end the first half with a 9-0 run and create a 43:29 lead. Dickinson dominated early in the second half and Michigan continued to step on the gas. U-M rose to 20 at 2:23 pm and never let it get any closer.
Earlier in the evening, the Michigan women also ranked No.. 16, won at No.. 15 Northwestern 84-63.
Crisler was allowed a select number of family members of players and coaches to enter, and 88 were in attendance on Sunday.
They saw a squad from Michigan who were mostly ruthless on both ends of the ground. The Wolverines stopped Northwestern 41 percent and blocked eight shots.
The Wolverines started slowly, made four sales, and scored no points on their first six possessions. Pete Nance scored the top eight for Northwestern for an early six point lead. Nance would only meet one more time.
The Wolverines found their groove and successive 3s from Mike Smith and Eli Brooks gave them a 15-10 lead with 13:30 in the half. Isaiah Livers was the seventh Wolverine to score and hit Michigan’s fifth 3 to score 23-14. He finished with 10 points. Brown’s second triple increased the lead to 10 with 8:30 left.
Just over four minutes more, Brown took a steal in midfield and dived on the other end. He was classified as technical because he was hanging on the edge, which resulted in the only free throw in the first half. It helped Northwestern cut the deficit to five, but Michigan finished half-time on a 9-0 run: Brooks hit a 3, Wagner followed, and Brooks made another. Michigan went 9-17 from the depths in the first half.
Dickinson went to work to start the second half. To counteract the doubles teams, he moved away from the basket and hit a pair of 15-foot boats. He scored 11 of Michigan’s first 13 points in the half. Brooks’ soaring fast-break dunk after a helping hand from Mike Smith increased Michigan’s lead to 20. Livers scored two goals to make it 63:40 when Northwestern called for a time out after six minutes for the first stop of the half.
Juwan Howard went deep into his bench for the final 4:10. Freshman Zeb Jackson hit a jumper for the first field goal of his career. Another newcomer, Jace Howard, the coach’s son, scored the first points of his career. He drove and scored a foul for Michigan final points, and the home bank – and Howard’s mother and brother, both in attendance – broke out.
