A massive explosion in downtown Nashville caused damage to several buildings and resulted in evacuations on Christmas Day.
The district chief of the Metro Nashville Office of Emergency Management said a parked RV near the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Commerce Street exploded early Friday, damaging a number of buildings nearby, the WKRN reporter said Nickelle Smith.
Jason Steen, editor of the Scoop Nashville website, tweeted that a building collapsed after the explosion. He reported on Twitter that firefighters withdrew after the incident and that all employees were held accountable.
« A building is on fire in the city center – looking for victims – several people have left the upper houses alone. Preparing for a multi-victim incident, triage being done on-site, « Steen tweeted. He added that most people appeared to have sustained minor injuries.
In a later tweet, Steen said the Nashville Fire Department had evacuated two more blocks and advised people to stay away from all vans and trucks on the road because of the « possibility of further explosions ». «
A video posted on Twitter by Jeremy Schott from a nearby building showed emergency vehicles at the scene and massive clouds of smoke rising into the sky.
