While it is in the 400. Episode is about celebrating the fabulous friendship between Ducky and Gibbs, like every NCIS episode, there’s a twist. The 400. Episode will reveal exactly how these seemingly different personalities bonded, but it was a rocky one as far as Meet Cutes go. In a quick glance, we first see medical examiner Jimmy Palmer talking to Gibbs about a body on his desk that has been identified as « Maurice Zuccato ». . As soon as Gibbs hears the last name, he is on high alert and it precedes Palmer’s testimony that he comes from « a family of evil ». . Palmer, curious about Gibbs’ reaction, asks « Do you know him? » To which Gibbs replied that he met a « cousin of his ». .
We then get a look back at a much younger Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon’s son Sean), who is told by an agent that he is very happy to have an encounter with one of Zuccato’s four cousins - « Ringo » – to have survived. Zuccato. It found Gibbs was locked in the trunk of his car, but he escaped with his life because Ducky was driving on the wrong side of the road and had an accident with Ringo’s car. Gibbs is obviously not with NCIS right now, but Ducky is. Gibbs offers to take out Ducky for drinks, bourbon to be precise, and it’s the start of a lovely friendship.
Gibbs also has a look back at Ringo Zuccato’s more dangerous cousin Johnny Zuccato as a younger man. In a spoiler-filled expanded promo for the episode on Instagram, we see Johnny Zuccato holding both young Gibbs and Ducky hostage, threatening Gibbs with a gun and punching him in the face, while Ducky visibly flinches in the background. At the start of this promo we see Elder Ducky ask Elder Gibbs if he thinks they will « ever see that face again, » to which Gibbs replies, « I wasn’t hoping » after Kasie Hines drew evidence that they did Johnny is involved in a new murder case in the present.
Much older Johnny Zuccato, the murderer who « escaped », mocks Gibbs by saying, « You didn’t get me 40 years ago and you won’t get me now. « . Gibbs, however, looks determined to correct the wrong when he says they can get him for murder because he came out of hiding. This means that the murder case that Gibbs and Ducky met was committed by Johnny who escaped, and that unfinished deal is what Ducky and Gibbs will complete in this episode.
There is apparently residual trauma from the incident as well, as both Gibbs and Ducky fearfully remember Johnny from being held hostage at the time. Their bond was made after they found themselves in a difficult situation, and we will find out if 40 years later they can catch the man who brought them together as fellow survivors. Indeed, the Gibbs case may have motivated them to join NCIS as well. The logic was that since a murderer escaped on his watch, he would make sure to become the agent and stop others like the Zuccattos.
